How Much Does App Development Cost in the UK in 2026?
Typical UK app development costs in 2026, from prototype to enterprise, with day rates, hidden costs and practical ways to keep the bill down.
TL;DR
In the UK in 2026, an app costs from about £4,000 for a prototype, £10,000 to £25,000 for an MVP at most agencies, £25,000 to £120,000 for a production app and £100,000 or more for complex enterprise apps. RudraX builds app MVPs from £5,500 in 8 to 12 weeks.
If you are planning an app in the UK, you will find quotes ranging from a few thousand pounds to well over £250,000. Both ends can be honest. The price depends on what the app has to do, which platforms it runs on, what it connects to and who builds it.
This guide sets out typical UK ranges for 2026, where the money goes, the costs people forget, and how to keep the bill down without building something you will later throw away.
The short answer
| App type | What it usually includes | Typical UK range | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clickable prototype or proof of concept | Key screens, one core flow, no real backend | From about £4,000 | 2 to 4 weeks |
| MVP (minimum viable product) | Sign-up, one core feature done properly, basic admin, analytics | £10,000 to £25,000 | 6 to 12 weeks |
| Production app | Full feature set, backend, admin panel, integrations | £25,000 to £120,000 | 3 to 6 months |
| Complex, enterprise, fintech or AI app | Regulated data, real-time features, many integrations | £100,000 to £250,000 and more | 6 to 12 months or longer |
Magora, a London agency, puts a typical UK MVP at £10,000 to £25,000 and a production app with a backend and admin at £25,000 to £60,000. Arch, another UK agency, places a medium-complexity cross-platform app at £50,000 to £120,000, and Spec India's 2026 guide puts complex enterprise apps at £100,000 to £250,000 or more. Our own starting prices at RudraX are lower, and we explain why further down.
What drives the price
- Features and complexity. Logins, payments, chat, real-time updates, offline use and AI features each add design, build and testing time.
- Platforms. Building separate native apps for iOS and Android costs more than one cross-platform app. Frameworks such as React Native let one codebase serve both stores, which suits most products.
- Integrations. Connecting to payment providers, CRM (customer relationship management) systems, booking engines or older internal systems is often where estimates grow.
- Compliance and security. Health data, financial services rules and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) obligations add work on data handling, audit trails and testing.
- Design depth. A polished, tested user experience costs more up front and usually saves money later, because fewer features need reworking.
- Who builds it. A freelancer, a London agency, an offshore team and a UK-managed hybrid team will all quote very differently for the same app.
What UK developers cost
Most of an app's cost is people's time, so day rates explain most of the price.
- The median UK contract day rate for developers was £500, according to IT Jobs Watch (3 months to September 2025).
- Adria Solutions' 2026 guide puts experienced software developer contractors at £450 to £650 a day outside IR35 (the UK off-payroll working rules).
A simple example: a small team of two developers and one designer working for eight weeks is about 120 person-days. At £500 a day, that is £60,000 before project management and testing. This is why a fixed, well-defined scope matters so much: every extra week of work adds thousands of pounds.
The costs people forget
- App store accounts. Apple's Developer Program costs US$99 a year, charged in pounds in the UK. Google Play charges a one-time US$25 registration fee.
- Maintenance. Plan for roughly 15 to 25 per cent of the original build cost each year, covering operating system updates, security fixes and small improvements.
- Hosting and services. Servers, databases, email and SMS (text message) providers, maps and AI model usage are usually monthly costs that grow with your users.
- Store commission. Apple and Google take a share of in-app purchases and subscriptions, so build this into your pricing.
- New features after launch. Most successful apps keep evolving. Budget for a second phase once real users show you what they need.
How to keep the cost down
- Start with an MVP. Build the one job your users care about most, launch it, and let real usage decide what comes next.
- Fix the scope before the build starts. Changes in the middle of a build are the most expensive kind.
- Go cross-platform unless you have a reason not to. One codebase for iOS and Android is usually faster and cheaper to build and maintain.
- Use proven services. Ready-made payment, login and messaging services are cheaper and safer than building your own.
- Ask for weekly demos. Seeing working software every week catches misunderstandings early, before they become costly rework.

RudraX Technologies is a London software development company with UK-led delivery and engineers in the UK and India. That structure gives clients UK project ownership and accountability, at a lower cost than an all-London team.
Our starting prices:
| Service | From |
|---|---|
| UI/UX design | £4,000 |
| Web development | £4,500 |
| MVP for startups | £5,500 |
| Mobile app development | £6,000 |
| Game development | £6,000 |
| AI agents | £6,500 |
| AI connectors and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers | £6,500 |
